Meet The Executive Committee for Classic & Interfaces TASS


Arthur Tabachneck (President, Classic TASS)

As Director of Insurance Bureau of Canada's Data Management department, Dr. Tabachneck is directly responsible for all aspects of the data the bureau collects and disseminates, as well as the bureau's Canadian Loss Experience Automobile Rating (CLEAR) system, the How Cars Measure Up publication, and the provision of data mining, statistical modeling and analytical services.

Arthur holds a doctoral degree from Michigan State University, a master’s degree from Marshall University, and a bachelor’s degree from Bethany College. He has been a SAS user since 1974, was the 2009 SAS Customer Value Award winner and the 2010 SAS-L MVS (Most Valuable SAS-Ler).



Bill Klein

Bill Klein first encountered SAS while working on his Ph.D at the University of Toronto. His career includes teaching positions in four Ontario universities, market research and project administration. Bill was the SAS administrator at Ryerson University for 16 years. As chief programmer he designed and implemented Ryerson’s fully automated examination marking system, written entirely in SAS. He continues his SAS career as a specialist in graphics, statistics and reporting.


Bruce Densmore

Bruce joined the Bank of Nova Scotia after graduation, in 1977.  His introduction to SAS came in the early 1980’s while working with mainframe performance and capacity data and analysis.  Since then he has been using, exploiting, and supporting SAS software.  In 1985, Bruce moved to an end-user support role involving over 300 SAS clients running on MVS, VM/CMS, and Windows platforms.  In 2001, he was “outsourced” to IBM, where he continue to support the SAS end-user community at the Bank of Nova Scotia. Bruce is now a part of the IBM account team for Scotiabank where SAS continues to play a vital role in his day to day responsibilities.

Bruce an active member of the Toronto Area SAS Society, serving on the executive over 15 years. He has been a SAS Certified Professional since it was introduced in 1999.



Carl Clutton

Carl started using SAS in 1981 and is a member of the TASS Executive Committee since 1987. He was the President of TASS from 1989 to 2006. He is a member of the Ontario Public Service.


Craig McCulloch, M.A.Sc., P.Eng (President, Interfaces TASS)

Craig started in retail photographic sales in Vancouver, moved into Metallurgical Engineering in Hamilton, with Stelco Steel, now U.S.Steel Canada. In 2003 Craig moved out of Mill Metallurgy and into Process Analysis of steel production data with SAS version 6. He moved from version 6, through 8 to 9.1 to 9.2 before retiring, and is now active in SAS Consulting, TASS, GHSUG, The Healing Cycle Foundation, model trains and riding his road bicycle.


Debby Gear

Debby is currently employed with CIBC’s Technology group and has been using SAS since 2000. She is a newbie to the executive group, recently joining in 2009. She specializes in data analysis and report writing but also uses SAS for its ETL capabilities. She uses SAS in a multiple of platforms including UNIX, MVS and Windows.


Harry Droogendyk

Harry Droogendyk has been an independant consultant since 1995, spending most of his time in the SAS world since 2000. Recognizing the vital role that user groups fill, Harry has been involved in both regional and international SAS user group conferences as a section chair and presenter for many years.


Hiten Patel

Hiten’s first exposure to SAS was in the MVS environment with a major Canadian bank starting in 1999 focusing on credit cards and small business banking. Once he got a chance to use PC SAS he earned the SAS Certified Professional V8 certification in 2002. After a three year hiatus Hiten returned to SAS in a Windows environment and currently is the lead SAS User at a Marketing Services company where he is responsible for reporting and analytics for client loyalty programs. His department currently utilizes SAS 9.2 on a Server via Enterprise Guide 4.2. He also works with internal IT and SAS Tech Support while attending TASS meetings over the last three years to help ensure the investment in SAS is being fully leveraged.

By joining the TASS Executive in January 2010, he looks forward to networking with fellow SAS enthusiasts.



Jim Burkhardt

Jim has had the rare opportunity to be associated with all aspects of the Steel industry from Steelmaking through to Customer Support during the past 28 years. Jim started with Research and Development where his ‘Statistical’ approach to engineering problem solving was refined. Jim then moved to the Metallurgical Department as a Process Analyst, and then onto Corporate Best Practices where he is responsible for the development and implementation of Process Diagnostics across U.S. Steel Canada; Hamilton and Lake Erie works.

Jim has 26 years of SAS experience starting with V5.18 in the Mainframe environment and more recently SAS/VMS, and SAS/Windows. Jim is currently responsible for Training and Supporting the U.S. Steel Canada SAS/EG community.
"When I started, we programmed using Cards and ran the plant using a 'Ferrite Core' computer with 8K of RAM. There have been many changes. SAS is the only area of continuity during my career and SAS has never failed to meet my high expectations."

By joining the TASS Executive in January 2010, he looks forward to networking with fellow SAS enthusiasts.



Laurent Josso

Laurent has been a SAS user for 16 years. Starting as statistician in the agriculture field, he moved to the consulting world for 10 years, continuously developing his SAS programming skills and leading business intelligence projects in various areas such as labor ministry, insurance, pharmaceutical industry. He joined RBC in 2009 as an analyst in the growing and innovative discipline of anti-money laundering and terrorism financing.


Lisa Eckler

Lisa Eckler is a consultant in Toronto who has been working with SAS software for long enough to remember when TASS began and when SAS Canada began.  Lisa is a Past President of TASS and has chaired sections at NorthEast SAS Users Group (NESUG) and SAS Global Forum.  She is looking forward to being Conference Co-chair for NESUG 2010 in Baltimore.


Matt Malczewski

Matt Malczewski is the User Group Program Manager for SAS Canada as well as the Editor of insights, the SAS user newsletter which goes out to over 5,000 subscribers in Canada. He became familiar with SAS - specifically, Enterprise Guide and Enterprise Miner - while completing post-graduate work in Customer Relationship Marketing. Currently, he enjoys a hectic schedule of managing over 30 user groups across the country while simultaneously coordinating SAS Canada’s involvement in SAS Global Forum and numerous sporting activities such as soccer, hockey, swimming and beach volleyball.

In a former life, Matt worked as a Disc Jockey, which probably goes a long way to explaining why he can’t seem to turn down the volume of his voice, as his extremely patient co-workers will attest.



Michael Lerner

Michael is a member of the Ontario Public Service. A SAS user since 1991, he is a social statistician with a particular interest in program evaluation and evidence-based social policy.


Mohamed Ismail

Mohamed is a SAS enthusiast who joined the TASS Executive in December 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, in Finance, from Ryerson University and has successfully completed the SAS Certified Base Programmer exam for SAS 9. Mohamed is currently working as a Project Manager in the marketing/advertising field.

Natalie Forde

Natalie’s primary responsibilities in SAS are in the unix world including database management, statistical programming and automation (database, scoring).  As the newest member on-board, Natalie highly recommends becoming a TASS Exec. Member to gain valuable SAS learning and network with great people.


Noemi Toiber Temin

Noemi's specialties with SAS are the management, analysis and presentation of clinical and safety data. She started using SAS during her master's degree in Statistics at York University. Professionally, she began, right after graduation, when she joined SciAn Services Inc., a CRO in Toronto, in 2005. She continues to employ and develop her SAS skills in her current position in ApoPharma Inc., the Innovative Drug Division of Apotex Inc.


Pramod Dogra

Over 10 years experience with SAS with strong Management, Business, Technical and Analytical background. He was first exposed to SAS in 1998 as a TA in Maths/Stats Dept of Southern New Hampshire University.He has wide Industry Exposure: Auto (OEM), Telecommunication, Financial Services, I.T. and Pharmaceutical and also holds an MBA, Master of Science -IT and Post Grad Dipl - Intl Business.Currently Researching GIS and Social Network Analysis and its application in Business Analytics (with SAS).


Rupinder Dhillion

Rupinder Dhillon has been a SAS user for 8 years and is a SAS Certified Professional V8. She enjoyed a brief hiatus from the SAS programming world when she joined the Customer Value Team at SAS Canada, supporting the various SAS User Groups across the Country. She has since regained her SAS User status and is now providing independent Consulting services.  She continues to stay involved in SAS User activities through TASS and other SAS Conferences.


Shan Ali Rasul

Shan has been using SAS for the past nine years across Unix, MVS and Windows platforms within the finance, credit card services, banking and retail service industry. He has a strong marketing background and specializes within the areas of campaign management, data mining and CRM. He holds an MBA in Management Information Systems as well as a Masters in Economics. In his spare time he enjoys photography and is an avid drummer.


Vivien Fan

Vivien joined CGI group in 1998 and started working for Scotiabank in 2003. She has been using SAS for over 10 years in three major environments: MVS,UNIX and Windows. She uses SAS for data analysis and report writing. Vivien is also a member of Scotiabank's SAS user group executive committee.
